Our philosophy
Architecture shaped by culture, built for context
UPA Italia by Paolo Lettieri Architects develops architectural solutions grounded in Italian design culture and tested against the demands of international practice.
The studio works across scales and typologies — from cultural institutions to private residences — with a consistent approach: every project is a specific response to a specific condition, not the application of a house style.
The practice operates under three principles that have defined its work across twenty-five years and four continents
Constraint as the starting point – Good architecture does not emerge despite its limitations — it emerges because of them. Site boundaries, programme requirements, cultural expectations, structural logic: these are not obstacles to be resolved before design can begin. They are the design.
The studio manages the full project lifecycle, from initial concept through construction delivery, maintaining direct design involvement at every stage. The objective is not the production of striking images, but the delivery of buildings that work — spatially, technically, and over time.
Twenty years is not a credential, It is a method – Experience in international practice means understanding that technical competence is not transferable by formula. Regulatory frameworks differ. Materials behave differently in different climates. What works structurally in Milan requires rethinking in Baghdad or Abu Dhabi.
The studio brings accumulated technical knowledge — in acoustics, envelope performance, structural coordination, and construction management — to each project as a working instrument, not a portfolio of past solutions.
A practice built across cultures, not just markets – UPA Italia has worked in Italy, the UAE, Iraq, Russia, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Switzerland, and Kyrgyzstan — not as a studio exporting Italian solutions, but as a practice that understands how architecture is made differently in each of those contexts.
The studio coordinates multidisciplinary teams of architects, engineers, and specialist consultants drawn from the relevant local and international professional landscape. Cultural familiarity is treated as a technical requirement, not a soft advantage.
